No offense, I hope, but it would be something of a disservice if I chose to skip any posts while continuing to call this blog Every Bob Dylan Song. Believe me, if I only wrote about the songs I wanted to, this project would be over by now. I'm sorry that you weren't a fan of this post; believe me, I'm not a fan of all of the stuff I write, either.

Md23, if Bob was actually thinking that, then either he has mental powers we weren't even aware of or his drug use in the late 60s and early 70s has been SEVERELY underreported.

senor, I appreciate your sentiment w/r/t this album; it's just not one that I particularly share. Nashville Skyline is all sorts of pleasant, and I've made no bones about how much I like that album. This one, though, just kind of strikes me the wrong way. If he was paying some sort of tribute, as you suggest, I simply don't think the juice was worth the squeeze.

Interesting that you suggest that possible reason for Self Portrait's miserable reputation, though. Not to tip my hand or anything, but I've given a bit of thought to that as well...Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12613923038816299394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2448601238585270507.post-87204130672026600742009-07-28T12:15:20.886-07:002009-07-28T12:15:20.886-07:00When it comes to this album, I forgot more than yo...When it comes to this album, I forgot more than you'll ever know.

Ouch. Even lamer on page than it was in my head.

Seriously, I think you're being too hard on this song and the album in general. Everybody (or most people) likes the songs on the Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid soundtrack as a loose and relaxed collection of Dylan setting a western mood. Most people like his folk covers albums from the early 90s as a revealing look into a genre of music that has influenced and interested Dylan over the years.

So why not like a loose, relaxed collection of Dylan setting a laid-back country mood as he gives us a revealing look into a different genre of music that's important to him?

I think the bad reputation of this album springs from the same source as the lack of respect for his Christian albums -- disappointed 60s activists angry that Bob wasn't pushing their political or cultural agenda.

Self-Portrait is a fun back-porch excursion with Bob and it was very worth my eleven bucks.senornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2448601238585270507.post-66109922765377373142009-07-28T05:26:43.695-07:002009-07-28T05:26:43.695-07:00Thanks Anthony I LOve yout tribute and interpretat...Thanks Anthony I LOve yout tribute and interpretation of Mr Dylan. I can't wait until you get onto his 'slow train' and 'saved' albums which were my real introduction to his other music and when I first became a fan.My favourite among many is 'What can I do for you' I posted a version of this on my blog which has superb
harmonica playing.
Peace and GraceAndrew Kennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02714318748847734699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2448601238585270507.post-9309010523888914962009-07-27T15:07:52.942-07:002009-07-27T15:07:52.942-07:00Rob, I actually liked this entry for the more abst...Rob, I actually liked this entry for the more abstract slant. The literary theorist in me gives it a thumbs up, haha. An evil part of me likes the idea that when Dylan made Self-Portrait, he was thinking, "fifty years from now some guy is going to make a blog where he talks about every song I've ever done. I should create this monster of a mess of an album and we'll see if he can survive THAT."Md23Rewlshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07464920420365453994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2448601238585270507.post-46143226005671918792009-07-27T12:50:45.177-07:002009-07-27T12:50:45.177-07:00Cecil Hull wrote the song in 1947 but Dylan takes ...Cecil Hull wrote the song in 1947 but Dylan takes credit as he has done with more than one song over the years.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2448601238585270507.post-59258786479148284242009-07-27T07:04:16.894-07:002009-07-27T07:04:16.894-07:00This song is one of the great classics of Country ...This song is one of the great classics of Country music (and in fact it is a great song, many people would prefer it over Dylan's mid-60s songs). This is the kind of music Bob Dylan grew up with and it's simply a little tribute to his Country "roots".

He performed it live in 1986 and introduced it with words like "People don't write this kind of songs anymore".

A live version from YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwyustjC4-UJürgen Klosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15320518895348914652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2448601238585270507.post-43701153660727650632009-07-27T06:23:41.809-07:002009-07-27T06:23:41.809-07:001) Please, do not skip songs. I found this entry the least clear yet, kept re-reading sentences but found it too much of a student essay, ie a little too self-involved and pretentious. I fear that greil Marcus piece has made clouded your writing. K.I.S.S.
Intended as constructive criticism since I remain an avid reader. Maybe it's worth questioning whether you really need to link each post to every single song? I don't think we readers will mind one bit if you skip some, and the irony of your blog title will then seem very dylanesque.Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16062180895899998738noreply@blogger.com
